                        Family Corbiculidae

Corbicula fluminea – Asian species, introduced ~1920 & abundant in nearly all NA streams.  Small (<2“), triangular to round shells w/ conspicuous concentric rings, lateral teeth on both sides of cardinal teeth.

                        Family Dreissenidae

Dreissena polymorpha - European species, introduced in Midwest in late 1980s & spreading rapidly (in lower Mississippi & Tennessee drainages).  Small (<1.5”), striped shell w/ sharp corners.

Family Unionidae

Amblema plicata – large (<8”), heavy shell w/ 3+ ridges. black-brown periostracum, white nacre.

Anodonta suborbiculata – large (<6”), thin, rounded shell lacking teeth.  Yellow-green periostracum, white iridescent nacre.

Fusconia flava – medium (<4”), heavy shell, subtriangular, posterior ridge, brown periostracum, white nacre

Lampsilis teres – large (<6”), moderate-thin shell, elongated, yellow periostracum, white nacre

Lasmigona complanata – large (<6”), thin shell in juveniles, moderate in adults, triangular, alate, brown to green periostracum, thin white iridescent nacre

Obliquaria reflexa - medium (<4”), heavy shell, subtriangular, three large nodules, rounded posterior ridge, sulcus, yellow periostracum, green rays, white nacre

Pleurobema oviforme – medium to small (<3”), elongate rhomboid in shape, yellow to brown periostracum, white nacre

Potamilus alatus - large (<6”), elongate to rounded, alate, brown periostracum, pink nacre

Quadrula metanevra - medium (<4”), rounded to subtriangular, many pustules, prominent posterior ridge, yellow & green periostracum, white nacre

Tritogonia verucosa – medium to large (<5”), elongate, many pustules, prominent posterior ridge, yellow & green periostracum, white nacre
