Sandy Hammontree was born and raised in North Georgia. She attended West Georgia College and began her teaching career while working on her Masters degree in Early Childhood Education. She has taught kindergarten, first, second, and third grade. She was active in the National Association for the Education of Young Children and held an office in the Georgia Association on Young Children. After receiving her Masters Degree she worked in Project Follow Through promoting quality early education for children, awareness for parents, and supervised the K-3 teaching staff to implement developmentally appropriate practices. Ms. Hammontree attended the University of Georgia and received a Specialist of Early Childhood Education and a Specialist of Administration and Supervision. Ms. Hammontree’s career continued in the area of Community Education. She coordinated and facilitated the Community Education activities of East Cobb County, where she also served as an officer in the State Association for Community Educators. In 1995 she received a proclamation for Community Involvement from Govenor Zell Miller.
While working as an administrator in an Elementary School, Ms. Hammontree became interested in the concepts of looping and multi-age classes and implemented a model of the programs in the school. She is a strong advocate of public education and worked for many years as a contact for the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. She began at Reinhardt in 2002 as an adjunct professor in the Price School of Education. Ms. Hammontree is the mother of one daughter who is also an educator. She also has a new granddaughter.
